My name is Bryan Harris. I am the founder of Videofruit.

Over the past 12 months, I’ve grown my email list from 0 to 10,000 subscribers.

But it wasn’t always easy…

If I heard the phrase “The money is in the list” one more time, I might have thrown up.

Every blog post I read and podcast I listened to talked about this mysterious email list. But NO ONE would tell me exactly how to build an email list (or how to make money from it).

Then I would read quotes from people with big established platforms. People like Jon Acuff, Michael Hyatt and Pat Flynn.

They would say things like…

When I started this blog, I made the newbie mistake of not including a way to accumulate email addresses. No newsletter, no opt-in form – nothing.” – Pat Flynn (75,000 subscribers)

But again, no actionable takeaways for me.

No system I could follow.

No blueprint.

Finally after months and months of frustration, I said “Screw it!”

The only way for me to figure it out was to experiment and learn the hard way.

So I started the Videofruit blog. I started studying what Gary Vaynerchuk, Seth Godin and Ramit Sethi were doing to grow their list.

I would find a strategy, install it and then measure the results. I repeated this process until I finally found a handful of strategies that worked REALLY well.

Then I took these strategies, improved on them and helped pioneer a new list-building system that’s now being used by the same people I learned from in the beginning.

Now, only 18 months later, I’ve been able to work with and coach some of the biggest names in online marketing: Michael Hyatt, Jeff Goins, Jon Acuff, Hubspot, KISSmetrics and Noah Kagan (among others).

Also, I started a coaching program for Videofruit readers who were just starting out and refined the system even further by walking more than 30 clients through the process.
5 fatal mistakes to avoid when building your list

There is only one thing standing between you and building your list.

A fatal mistake.

The only mistake you can’t learn and recover from is a fatal one.

On my journey from 0 to 10,000 subscribers, I discovered 5 fatal mistakes. Things you HAVE TO AVOID at all costs if you’re going to reach your goal of growing an email list.
Mistake #1: Basing your entire business off of blog posts and podcasts

Most “experts” will teach you to build your business by mapping out a gigantic 75-page business plan and then executing each step of it.

As entrepreneurs, we know that’s a silly way to go about it.

It sounds nice and warm and cuddly. But’s it’s completely ignorant of the way business actually works.

But one of the biggest problems I see us making is swinging to the other end of the spectrum.

We take “lean startup” to mean “You don’t need a plan; you can figure out everything as you go.”

This is just as silly.

Deriving 100% of your strategy and business acumen from blog posts and podcasts is like becoming a doctor by reading WebMD articles.

There is a better way. A more efficient and thorough way to learn what you need to know.

You HAVE to have a guide.
Mistake #2: Not knowing how to make money from the list

Now that you have a list, what do you do with it?

You’d be shocked how many time this happens.

Someone spends months (years even), builds up a solid list of 5,000 to 10,000 subscribers and then….

Nothing.

They have no idea what to do next.

Instead of using that list to discover exactly what their readers want, then creating and launching that product, they flounder.

The truth is you don’t need 100,000 readers to create a sustainable income.

My first product was launched to 26 subscribers.

Which leads us to mistake #3.
Mistake #3: Thinking you need more subscribers than you actually do

You don’t have to have a gigantic email list to make extremely good money online. I always thought that to have a $10,000 launch I needed 10s of thousands of people on my list.

But that’s just not true.

Here are a few numbers. Actual launch numbers from me and a few friends…

Subscribers: 2,500
First Launch Revenue: $30,000

Subscribers: 650
First Launch Revenue: $45,000

Subscribers: 6,500
First Launch Revenue: $25,000

Subscribers: 26
First Launch Revenue: $800

Subscribers: 3,600
First Launch Revenue: $51,000

Your results will vary. There are a lot of moving parts to consider in the numbers above. But it’s a mistake to think you have to work for 3 years to build an email list before being able to create sustainable and reliable income from it.
Mistake #4: Focusing on the wrong platforms (like Instagram and Twitter)

Look…

Every new platform that comes out will be more “popular” than the next.

Twitter
Instagram
Snapchat

Each one has grown faster and received more press than the rest. Which means you read more about them than any other channel.

But the truth is this…

Nothing even comes close to touching email when it’s time to get your readers to take action.

Mistake #5: Not having someone hold you accountable

The problem is that you think you can do everything by yourself.
